mother is 62 and has been hospitalised what wil happen next, tests, medication etc ?
I have this. I had an angioplasty, but it is often controlled successfully by drugs
are you sure you mean unstable? that is the type that occurs lleading uo to a heart attack.
You might mean stable or even variant.
In angina, the heart muscle is not getting enough blood supply for its needs and complains with pain on exertion. in a heart attack part of the heart muscle gets no blood supply and dies.
In unstable angina, the pain of angina gets more easily brought on by less and less activity and the pain is increasingly bad. This is over a few days.
This indicates the blood flow to parts of the heart is quickly reducing and could soon stop leading to a heart attack.
The doctors will first give medications to open up the hearts blood vessels as much as possible. they may progress to an angiogram if this fails. if that shows significant blackage of the main blood vessels of the heart then a bypass or stenting could be done.
I was diagnosed with unstable angina,I had a heart attack in 2000,I have since had 2 stents put in my main artery, that was 4 years ago ,Your mum will be put on heart medication and maybe have an angiogram, nothing to worry about there as I have had 3 and there is no pain involved,
My husband has just been diagnosed with it also and he is on heart medication ,the good thing about all this is your mum is being watched, so many people out there who dont even know they have heart proplems until it is too late ,we are both now in our 60s and life hasn`t changed much apart from what we eat, keep a watch on the fat content ,tell your mum good luck, and try not to get stressed ,maggie
Angina is caused by pain in the hart Angiogram = recording device inserted into groin then up to the top of the hart where the operating hart can be visualised and the cause of Angina visualised.
Hart pain may indicate poor circulation which may require by pass / open hart surgery
Clapper
Unstable Angina is normally a symptom of coronary artery disease, hardening of the arteries due to fatty deposits on the walls
Unstable Angina is normally a sign that a heart attack is on its way or that the patient has suffered a heart attack
I would expect your Mother to under go a stress test to see how her heart functions an ECG and then an angiogram
This is where a small camera is inserted in the main artery in the groin or arm
this will show if she needs a stent or if by pass surgey is required
You mother should be given lipid lowering drugs and beta blockers as well as other drugs to thin the blood
Long term out look for heart disease is now very good and most patients go on to live a full and normal life
With unstable angina, it's only a question of "when" …not "if", she'll have a heart attack, and where and when is just pot-luck, So, – she must accept some invasive treatment, – angioplasty, or by-pass graft.
Don't hang about dithering when it's offered Take it.
If not, her quality of life will simply deteriorate until she gets to the stage where invasive surgery is no longer possible. Unstable NEVER gets better; it can only be staved off.
