Anxiety Attack or Angina?

Anxiety Attack or Angina?

Question by kimmermer: Anxiety Attack or Angina? My husband has a history of extremely high blood pressure, for which he has to take medication twice daily. Last evening he was experiencing a tightness in his chest that was extremely painful at the time, and he was concerned that he was having these pains because of the possibility of what chest pains can be. My husband is 26 years old, and is not in the best health at this point in time, he is not extremely over weight, but could eat a lot healthier.when we got to the hospital last night his first Blood pressure reading was 194 over 114, usually a healthy rate is 120 over 80 I am sure, or something very close to that reading. The doctor ran a blood test and said it came out find and told us that because they couldn’t find anything that he must be having an anxiety attack. He was sleeping at the time of which this all had began to occur. He has been layed off work for a few months and we are in the middle of moving, but he has a new job on the horizons which he is looking forward to, and we had a nice relaxing weekend. We are not really stressed about what is going on, although it is not the best situation. Given his medical history it would seem more likely that he was experiencing an episode of angina and not an episode of anxiety, and because his tests came back clear that they found nothing except for an extreme blood pressure level that they couldn’t do anything. now it just seems like a waiting game to wait and see if he has another attack, which is nerve racking. We are going to our family doctor next week for a follow up and possible medication change and that we want to see a cardiologist. We just really don’t know what to make of all of this. He has a history of hear disease in his family and both parents have high blood pressure. The doctor said if it happened again that we are to co

Answer by PsychoChick966To me, it does not sound like it was anxiety. I think it was angina. You’re not always gonna “see” something wrong in tests, to diagnose a medical problem such as angina. Angina, is a transient thing. they were looking specifically, for signs that your husband had a heart attack. Testing would’ve shown that. I believe that since the things that they were looking for (to diagnose an MI) were not present, they said nothing was wrong. Angina results from the heart not getting enough oxygen at a given time, but does not always result from something like a heart attack. I believe your husband’s doctor will be much more reliable in diagnosing your husband since he knows him. Your doctor may prescribe your husband nitroglycerin in case the episode happens again. I guess the bottom line is, that you should rely on your doctor for help right now, and if you’re not happy, keep on searching. If your husband does not have any medical issues that would preclude him from taking aspirin (such as a bleeding problem or peptic ulcer), if he has the signs/symptoms of a heart attack (myocardial infarction) again, he should chew an aspirin……however, please run it by your doc when you see him/her just to be safe. good luck to you both.
